The bipolar patient is very « affective » , has a high emotional level, and certain characteristics lead to fragile interpersonal relations.
In effect, there is a tendency to frequently note in people suffering from bipolar disorder, a hypersensibility to injustice, to abandonment, to separation and to betrayal.
This hyper-reactivity can make him/her seem moody, hysterical, selfish, etc... In fact, interpersonal relationships with a bipolar are often characterized by misunderstandings and conflicts.
In a bipolar patient, you often find :
-
A tendency to emotional dependency
-
A need, sometimes obsessive, to please
-
An excessive appetite for competition and challenges
-
A tendency to love or hate suddenly and excessively (law of « all or nothing »)
-
A tendency to multiply friendly and romantic superficial relationships due to fear of being alone and abandoned
-
A tendency to avoid emotional and affective commitments due to fear of being rejected
-
A strong tendency to be jealous
In an anxious/phobic patient, you often find :
-
A tendency to isolation and avoidance
-
A hypersensitivity to criticism
-
A lack of self-esteem
In the patient with obsessive-compulsive disorder, you often find :
-
A tendency to isolation and avoidance
-
A tendency to be very meticulous, ordered and superstitious
These interpersonal problems should be seriously taken into consideration, and can, for example, be treated by individual therapy and, above all, group therapy.
