Sexuality

In bipolar disorders, sexuality can be disturbed for many reasons

  • In the (hypo)manic phase, the increase of libido, excitement and euphoria, can degenerate into risk-taking behaviors (multiple partners, unprotected sex..)
  • In the depressed phase, one generally notes a decrease in libido. However, some people suffering from bipolar disorders can complain of a paradoxical increase in libido even though they are despondent.

Risky Behaviors :

It is essentially in the (hypo)manic phase that sexual behaviors can be quite dangerous and result in maximum risk- taking. The risk of Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) is higher, notably contamination by the AIDS virus.

Effects of Medications :

The types of medication combinations and those prescribed for mood disorders (depression, bipolarity, cyclothymia..), anxiety disorders (phobias, fears, panic attacks) and obsessive-compulsive disorders, can have different effects on the sexual life of the patient.

The most common side effects are :

  • Decrease or loss of libido (less or no desire)
  • Erection difficulties
  • Ejaculation disorders (difficulty ejaculating)

Whatever the problem is,  you should talk about it without taboos to your physician.

IMPORTANT : By speaking as honestly as possible and without reserve or shame, you will make easier the treatment of your disorder. Your physician is someone you can trust, sworn to medical secrecy, who is there to help you , not to judge you.
